Baked by Melissa has moved beyond its New York bakeries and online ordering system by introducing a new line of at-home baking kits now sold at Target. This represents the company’s first entry into non-perishable products, allowing customers to recreate its signature bite-sized cupcakes without needing to visit a physical location.
The baking kits, Christmas Tie-Dye, Marshmallow Hot Cocoa, and Red Velvet, debuted on November 1 and are available exclusively through Target’s stores and website. Alongside these, the brand is launching matching cupcake liners and silicone baking pans in one- and two-piece configurations. This marks the first time Baked by Melissa has distributed products through physical retail channels, a strategy co-founder and president Melissa Ben-Ishay had previously resisted for years.
Ben-Ishay acknowledged the decision was not made lightly. The company spent nearly a year preparing for this expansion, including promoting Sanjay Khetan from chief financial officer to CEO in March. The transition was framed as essential for building the operational and financial foundation needed to support the new product line.

The launch supports Baked by Melissa’s broader goal of making its products more accessible. The brand’s social media presence, with 2.8 million followers on TikTok and 1.9 million on Instagram, has played a significant role in its growth, particularly during the pandemic when Ben-Ishay’s food content went viral. Beyond direct sales, the company has also strengthened its market position through collaborations with Ferrero, Tabasco, Paw Patrol, and Emily in Paris, partnerships that have expanded its customer base and increased revenue.
Transitioning to retail distribution required adjustments to the company’s operations. Unlike its existing model, which allows for 24-hour production turnaround, the new shelf-ready products involve longer lead times. She stressed that these values remain central to the company’s identity.
Target’s partnership signals Baked by Melissa’s shift from a specialty dessert provider to a lifestyle brand. The baking kits, priced for holiday shoppers, serve as a test of whether the company’s dedicated fanbase will translate into broader market success. For now, the kits remain exclusive to Target, with no immediate plans for wider retail distribution.
