A former Lloyds Bank branch in Tutbury, Staffordshire, has reopened as a Spar convenience store, bringing back one of the village’s most familiar buildings to serve the community. The property, owned by retailer Kalpesh Odedra, was acquired freehold and converted after the bank shut down in March 2022, followed by the departure of Swinkles Family Brewers in 2024. Inside, the store preserves its Art Deco façade, original front doors, vault, and safe, merging historical character with contemporary retail design.
Spar Tutbury now serves as a one-stop shop for practical needs, stocking fresh produce, budget-friendly essentials, and daily staples. A standout section features premium wine and spirits, alongside dedicated aisles for gluten-free, vegan, and free-from products. The store also guarantees prices on key items for 12 weeks, extending into autumn. Adding to its appeal is a fresh Indian street food counter and an ice cream bar—options previously missing from the village’s limited food choices.

The project aligns with a growing trend of adapting heritage buildings for retail use. AF Blakemore, which runs the Blakemore Trade Partners Plus (BTP+) initiative, backed Odedra’s vision by offering operational and structural support for independent retailers. The program prioritizes fresh food, affordability, and community engagement while allowing customization to fit each location’s unique needs.
Odedra emphasized the building’s importance to the community, stating that the store’s design reflects Spar’s core strengths—freshness, value, and reliability—while maintaining the site’s historic identity. Special promotions like a County Bridge ‘3 for £9’ fresh meat offer and Fresh Savers fruit and vegetables range strengthen its appeal. The Art Deco details further distinguish the store, making it a standout in a village with few retail alternatives.
