Tomra has introduced the TOMRA B3 reverse-vending device in the United Kingdom, aiming at small-format retailers that will need to accommodate the forthcoming deposit-return scheme scheduled for 2027.
Compact design for busy shop floors
The unit occupies only 0.45 sqm of floor space, which allows owners to retain product displays while providing an automated container-return point. A wheeled version adds flexibility for placement in narrow aisles.
Equipped with barcode scanning, weight sensors and image-based recognition, it accepts PET plastic bottles and metal cans. Each item is processed quickly, delivering a smooth recycling experience for shoppers.
Financial incentives and rollout plans
Starting in October next year, consumers will pay a refundable 20p deposit on eligible drinks, which can be reclaimed at participating locations. The DRS operator, Exchange for Change, will pay a handling fee for every container collected, with a higher rate applied to automated devices.

“TOMRA B3 is the smallest RVM in our portfolio, and gives convenience stores and independent retailers a practical way to automate returns without sacrificing valuable store space. It also provides customers with an easy and reliable return experience,” said Sondre Henningsgård, managing director for Tomra Collection UK.
The added fee, combined with labor savings, makes automation attractive. Stores that switch from manual handling can free staff time and potentially draw shoppers who value speed and reliability at the point of return.
The device is being showcased this week at the Resource and Waste Management Expo (RWM) in Birmingham’s NEC, alongside other solutions aimed at supporting the national recycling infrastructure.
