Ahold Delhaize expects its U.S. websites to be back online in the coming days after taking them offline last week due to a cyber incident.
The company’s European websites have started to restore service, with its Albert Heijn banner in the Netherlands and Etos and Gall & Gall websites back online.
Home deliveries for Albert Heijn are expected to resume this Friday. Ecommerce has also been fully restored in Belgium, where the company operates the Delhaize banner.
In the U.S., at least two of Ahold Delhaize’s banners, Stop & Shop and The Giant Co., are offering customers a 10% discount on their next in-store purchase, up to a maximum of $10.
Frans Muller, president and CEO of Ahold Delhaize, apologized for the inconvenience caused by the incident, stating that the company’s investigation confirms taking the websites and mobile apps offline was the right decision.
The company notified the Dutch National Cyber Security Centre within 24 hours of discovering the malicious activity and filed a formal police report with the Dutch police.
Ahold Delhaize found no evidence at this moment that suggests any sensitive customer, associate or partner data was taken during the incident.
Last week, the U.S. banners posted links to food delivery services, such as DoorDash, Instacart, and Uber Eats, as well as a link to the weekly ad, while direct online ordering remains inaccessible.
The cyber incident coincided with a cyberattack on supermarket operators across France, which caused refrigerators at hundreds of stores to heat up, resulting in widespread losses.
Ahold Delhaize’s U.S. banners are providing alternative options for customers, including the 10% discount on in-store purchases and links to food delivery services.
