Amazon has officially launched its Prime Air service in the United Kingdom. From its fulfillment center near Darlington, England, the company can now deliver parcels by drone. Customers living within a 12-kilometer radius can now have certain items delivered with this shipping method.
First Outside the United States
This was announced in a blog post on Amazon News at the beginning of this month. According to the ecommerce giant, it is the first time that its drone delivery service, Prime Air, is available to customers outside of the United States. The company previously announced European pilots for this service in 2023, but it took time for aviation regulators to allow the use of drones within test countries. A year later, Amazon was testing drone deliveries in the United Kingdom and Italy.
It appears that the pilot phase has concluded and the service is now officially launched. In January, Amazon unveiled the location of its first Prime Air facility: its fulfillment center in Darlington. Customers living in a 12-kilometer radius of this specific location can now utilize the drone delivery system.
Eligible Items and Requirements
Drone delivery is currently only an option for items that fit in a shoebox and weigh 2.2 kg or less. To utilize this service, customers must possess a private outdoor space, such as a garden, yard, or driveway. This restriction significantly limits the service’s availability in dense urban environments or high-rise apartment blocks, areas where the demand for rapid logistics is often highest.

Customers can select the drone delivery option during the checkout process. According to Amazon, millions of items meet these specific size and weight criteria. While the technology offers a fast alternative for local delivery, these restrictions create a specific barrier to entry for many households.
Deliveries are made within 60 minutes or less after the order is placed. For the time being, the service is integrated into the Amazon Prime membership, meaning customers do not need to pay an additional fee for this expedited option. However, the online marketplace has indicated that it might introduce delivery fees comparable to other premium speed services when the service is extended to broader areas.
Technical Specifications and Privacy Concerns
The drones used for these deliveries fly at speeds up to around 112 kilometers per hour. These machines are equipped with cameras and sensors, which are designed to help the drones steer clear of obstacles during flight. Despite these safety features, no specific information was provided on how Amazon intends to ensure that these cameras do not breach European privacy rulings, such as the Data Protection Directive.
