Respawn Entertainment Hits By Layoffs As Electronic Arts Cuts 5% Of Its Workforce
Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind the popular battle royal shooter Apex Legends, was hit with layoffs last week in line with Electronic Arts’ earlier announcement that it would be cutting 5% of its total workforce. That same announcement also revealed the cancellation of an unannounced Star Wars first-person shooter game that was in the early stages of development at Respawn.
EA is now refocusing Respawn’s development efforts towards its owned IPs and the extremely successful Star Wars Jedi franchise. That includes expanding Apex Legends beyond the boundaries of traditional battle royale with the addition of new game modes over the next few months and years.
A small team at Respawn is also rumored to be working on a new game set in the Titanfall universe with Titanfall and Titanfall 2 director Steve Fukuda at the helm.
